“How do I clean my silver jewellery?”

This is up there with the most common questions I get asked as a silversmith, but once you know how it’s super simple. . .

Removing Tarnish

If your silver jewellery has turned dark or black, all is not lost! Follow these simple steps to bring it back to its original colour:

  1. Soak your jewellery in warm water with washing-up liquid for a few minutes

  2. Use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub

  3. Rinse under clean water

If it still needs a little more help . . .

  4. Get your hands on some Town Talk Silver Sparkle*, and leave your jewellery in the liquid for a few minutes

  5. Rinse, dry, then polish with the microfibre cloth included - TA DAH!

And then my 2 top tips for general jewellery care

  1. When it’s not being worn

store it in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, in a box with a lid. Ideally, keep each piece separate to avoid scratches. The boxes my jewellery comes in are perfect as these won’t cause it to tarnish, or a jewellery box, such as the ones from Stackers, with separate compartments are fab.

  2. ALWAYS put your jewellery on last when getting ready

Some chemicals in make-up, hair products and perfumes etc (as well as chlorine in swimming pools) can cause sterling silver to tarnish. Do your best to avoid these coming into contact with your jewellery by popping it on last - think of your jewellery as the icing on the cake.

By following these tips you can keep your jewellery looking shiny and beautiful for years to come.
